Cowdrey have friendly start
- Cowdrey's first friendly of 2010 was at Gravesend against a mixed 1s & 2s side from the 2nd and 3rd Divisions of the Kent League.
New 1s skipper Sully won the toss and fielded first.
- Gravesend started well before Fenners bowled Church with an excellent in-cutter. Rooney couldn't find his line and was replaced by Sully, who quickly took 2 wickets, while Hoody also got a wicket to leave Gravesend 93-4. Warner replaced Sully and removed Binning and skipper Curtis, who was given out LBW by his brother on the 3rd LBW appeal in that over. Meanwhile at the other end Robert Champion had been punishing the Cowdrey attack with some hefty blows and he and Robbi Nash put on 50 in quick time. Sully return to bowl Champion for an excellent 66 and Gravesend finished their 40 overs on a competitive 204-7.
- Cowdrey lost opened Leo Holmes early, plumb LBW, and this brought Jack Southwart to the crease to join Steve Thomas. They batted sensibly, building a partnership whilst putting the bad balls away. At drinks just after half way Cowdrey were 90-1. Soon after drinks Jack fell to a googly from young bowler Binning and Warner joined ST at the crease. ST reached his 50 while Warner's first 6 scoring shots were all 4's. He was due at the dog track for 6.30 and it had just ticked past 6.31 when Cowdrey were looming in on victory. Warner passed his 50 and had put on 107 with ST when he fell to the returning Williams for 90. Just 5 were needed for victory and Jason Carver wanted to finish in one hit but was caught behind for a 5 ball duck, leaving it to Warner to win the game with a massive 6 over cow into someone's back garden.
- Good victory for Cowdrey and a good game enjoyed by all.

THE MISSOURI 340 CANOE RACE
- The landlord of the George & Dragon in Tonbridge, Darren Apps (DA) and one of his regulars Steve Gallagher (skippy) have entered this years Missouri 340 canoe race. This entails canoeing 340 miles down the Missouri river within the allotted time of 88 hours. This annual event is the world's longest non stop canoe race with 30% of entrants failing to finish within the time allowed. The event starts in Kansas on July 27th and finishes in St. Louis on July 30th.
- The George & Dragon has become synonymous with charity fundraising over the past 6 years. During this time the pub has raised in excess of £214,000 for both local and national charities. This has been achieved by various means, from organising local events such as the Tonbridge Its A Knockout, a sponsored walk around a local reservoir and a walk from John O Groats to Lands End.
- This year the money being raised is going to be divided between a national charity, Macmillan Cancer Support and a managed trust fund which has been set up by us to support a friend and regular of the pub. Fraser Jones was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year; he has two young children and a mortgage and is currently unable to work due to ongoing treatment. He is receiving support from the Macmillan group. The fund has been set up professionally and has 3 trustees to ensure the correct use of the funds raised.
- More information can be found by visiting the website www.canoeagainstcancer.com , donations can be made through the link on that site or by filling in the sponsor forms that DA and skippy have. DA’s can be found at the George & Dragon.
- Thanks for your support.

Under 11's Season
- Cowdrey Under 11’s Share Title (Stuart Seal U11 Coach/Manager)
- A season in which Cowdrey dominated through the first seven matches of their 10 match season. Then a tight game away to Flimwell ended in a narrow defeat and a slight confidence dip echoed through the squad.
There were many key performances with 3 wicket hauls and 25’s in abundance throughout the team and the fielding in patches had been exceptional.
- In all, 18 players were used to complete our league programme, with school trips and other activities effecting availability at the back end of the campaign. Despite this, the squad held strong and the team had won eight out of nine going in to the final match. Although bonus points had taken us ten points clear, our final opponents, Edenbridge, had the very same win/lose record.
In the tightest game of the season and on a track that did little for the batsmen, Edenbridge managed the win with just a few balls remaining.
The end result was a shared title with Cowdrey and Edenbridge joint winners of The Under 11’s Border League Division 2.
Cowdrey Under 11’s are joint Champions of The Border League Division 2.
- All the players deserve a mention; however here are the top performances in brief:
- 5 x 25’s Jake McGroarty & David Challis,
- 4 x 25’s & 1 x 3 wickets haul Bradley Warwick-Browne,
- 3 x 25’s & 2 x 3 wicket haul’s Alfie Hoare,
- 2 x 3 wicket hauls & 1 x 25 Joe Devlin,
- 25’s for Harvey Coton & Tom Simmonds,
- 3 wicket haul’s Joe Massey & Ben Wallace.
- The other squad members are:
Jack Roberts, Sam Larkin, Toby Seal, Max Cooper, Philip Davis, Tom Weedon, Jack Sellar, Sam Bell, Will Hinchelwood, Rory Salter, Shiv Pattanshetti.
- The team voted for their own “Player of the Season” and Alfie Hoare was the worthy recipient. Well done Alfie.
- It was a pleasure to manage the Under 11’s this season and the squad did extremely well to gain a trophy for Cowdrey CC. All of the parent’s were hugely supportive throughout the season and I am sure players appreciate the effort and commitment.
Good luck to all the players moving up to the next age group and also the new blood who will take up the challenge of retaining the title.
Double Wedding Bells!
- Congratulations to Steve and Amy Thomas, and Glen and Helen Warner, who waited for the season to finish before tying the knot!
- Best wishes from all at the club go to the happy couples!.
Final day round-up 2009
- The 2nd X1 had a good win against Wickham Park today which cements their position in the Kent League. Steve Thomas hit a long awaited excellent century as the highlight.
- The 1st X1 lost a winner takes all game to Deal, the eventual worthy League Champions. Chris Jones added another wicket making 46 in total for the season.
- Well done to both teams for all of their efforts during the season.

Golf Day Results
- With the threat of appalling weather, 12 brave souls arrived at Darenth Valley GC on Friday to participate in the hastily arranged 'unofficial' Cowdrey Golf Day.
- Torrential downpours, thunder, lightning and greens resembling lakes, didn't dampen the spirits although good scores were hard to come by. Thankfully at the half way stage, the weather improved with blue skies and warm sunshine, so we persevered on. The scoring improved accordingly with most players showing a better back nine.
- Will Needham won with a stableford score of 40 points playing off a handicap of 13
- Thanks to those that played and made it an enjoyable day.
Aussie bowler sets BATTING record!
- Chris Jones set a new club batting record on Sunday when he scored 184 not out.
- On a very hot afternoon, Chris batted throughout the innings, and was cheered on by many of the clubs players who had come to watch.
- The previous record of 180 was held by Glen Warner coincidentally at the same ground, Leigh, Kent.
Aussie confirmed for Cowdrey
- Aussie fast bowler, Chris Jones, will be joining CCC this summer as our overseas player. In 2008 Chris had a successful year at Wooton Basset CC in the West Country helping them to promotion, whilst taking many multiple wicket hauls. We would like to welcome Chris to our squad at CCC and hope he enjoys his stay with us.
Sully's soldiers win promotion!!
- Well done to the 2's as they finished runners up securing promotion to the Kent League 2nd X1 Div 4. On a rain soaked Swanmead pitch, Ian Scott stepped up to the plate and cracked a terrific 152 runs with great support from Steve Smith, to help our boys make a huge target for Bromley Town to achieve. We then bowled out the Town securing all the points we needed to leapfrog Offham into second spot. The champagne was flowing as Sully was overjoyed, "its been a long season and I am so proud of these boys" he said through tear stained eyes..."lets get to the George!"
Cowdrey colt makes Kent squad
- Jake McGroarty from our Under 11's has been invited to join the Kent Young Cricketers U11 squad. Whilst we have had many players attend trials for Kent, Jake, a right handed batsman and leg spin bowler, is the first Cowdrey colt to achieve such a high County status. Gary Marshall, Cowdrey's Director of Cricket, and everyone at Cowdrey CC would like to say well done to Jake and wish him every success for the years ahead.
