Win yet nag-ging doubts

With 'tomtom'Warner and selected convoy arriving an hour and a half behind Pencils and co, the early arrivals had plenty of time to survey the wicket. With wet weather forecast we put New Ash Green into bat. With their dangerous opener Scanlan out for a duck, it looked like we may have made the right choice. However John at number 3 soon tested the patience of our attack with a dogged performance lasting 129 balls for a top score 38, before finally out LBW off Warner. Klus and Mayers A. (62 runs last week) dug in for a while before the latter was bowled by Probert. Mayers V. then came to the crease but was quickly caught out trying to hit over Warner at mid on. Saunders followed soon after for another duck, leaving Dehaney and captain Sumner at the crease. They built an excellent partnership together rescuing what could have been another disaster like the initial leg earlier in the season. Sumner saw Dehaney caught by Warner off Marshall for 22, and with 5 or so overs and the three remaining tail enders later, was to see out the rest of the innings with 35 not out. New Ash Green ended on 141 all out.

Cowdrey opened with the inform Wright and Southwart Jnr who after a jumpy start, soon put 50 on the board between them. Jack was first to go(11) to be replaced by brother Joe. Andy Mayers was soon to have three in the bag seeing off Wright (41) and Southwart Snr (13). From the other end, the impressive Sumner was bowling tightly and was rewarded with the wicket of Hammond (0). Warner came to the crease, which was needed at the time, as we looked like imploding (yet again) for a while, as Willcox and Needham were both out to 'fifer' Andy Mayers. Probert played the way he plays best, by leaving as many balls as he dares, which had the desired effect and brought us nearer to what should have been an easier target to reach. Warner(19) and Probert(10 off 71 balls) were eventually out, with Seb and Clarky seeing us home. 142 for 8

With less than a handful of games to go, lets make sure we concentrate on the job in hand, and push towards promotion by playing to the best of our abilities. Dont lose sight of our objectives by overly focusing on our opponents, we should be winning 'the right way' and talking about positives rather than negatives. Todays conversations were unnecessary against a self proclaimed weaker opposition, who would have been happier losing to a team by 'the spirit of the game'. They very nearly had the last laugh. Bad reputations are building fast through our own fault and it is time to turn it around, we have some of the best players (young and old) in the League. Lets hit the right form and be proud again! Nuff said!

Corinthian spirit sermon over!
