Win at Walmer
Cowdrey's latest match took them the to Walmer on the outskirts of Dover. Walmer had no umpire but Cowdrey were donated GM this week, claiming that he was injured. That's not what Lewis has said. Walmer conceded the toss and ST chose to field, to the bemusement of Andy Roberts.
With only 5 Cowdrey players and 8 Walmer players there for the start, the match was delayed 12 minutes, Cowdrey still only having 9, Rooney and Inzy the culprits.
Cowdrey started the best they could, Ben Greehy bowling 6 very tight overs for 6, with Hoody opening from the other end. Smudger replaced Hoody and, when his first ball was a full toss and was dispatched for 4, ST was praying for Rooney and Inzy's arrival. But Smudger got better and ST saw that the wicket might have a bit of turn in it and brought himself on. The first 4 balls were ok but 2 half trackers for 4 finished the over and the only spell ST will bowl this season.
Smudger continued and young Freddie Greehy replaced ST. By this time Rooney and Inzy had just pulled up, to a round of applause from the other Cowdrey players. With not much urgency in their attitude, Rooney had time to light a fag and smoke it before they reached the pavilion.
Freddie followed on from his brother, bowling 5 overs for 7. In 12 overs from that end only 23 runs had been conceded, 10 of ST's over.
Smudger continued and was bowling a much tighter line. Rooney eventually replaced Freddie and got the breakthrough before drinks, finding the edge of Grigg's bat the ball after a lovely straight drive for 4. After drinks Rooney removed no.3 Aplin but opener Cotton was still there trying to get off the mark.
Skipper Moore came in at 4 and accelerated the scoring rate, hitting 7 4's in his 42 not out. He outscored Cotton who ended up 40 not out off 180 balls to bat out the 50 overs. This wonder knock followed an impressive 35 not out in a midweek 40 over game. Walmer ended up on 159-2 off 50 overs which Cowdrey believed was probably a below par score on a flat track and fast outfield.
And it proved to be. The 10 men of Walmer were under the cosh straight away, Smudger and Appys starting positively with 40 odd coming off the first 5 overs. Changes from both ends saw the bowling tighten up a bit but Cowdrey continued to score quickly. Paul Button was introduced from the far end and immediately had Smudger in trouble, dropping a c&b chance with Smudger on 46. The next ball brought up Smudger's first 50 of the season, to his obvious delight. But it wasn't long before he was on his way back to the pavilion, caught behind off the excellent Grigg. ST came in next but was gone for a 6 ball duck, his form continuing…
Inzy in at 4 and he played some excellent cricket shots and had raced to 31 when Appys finished the game off. 3 4s, the first of which brought up his 50, then the Cowdrey win, by 8 wickets inside 30 overs.
So another excellent win for the Cowdrey 2s proving bowling first was the right thing to do. Luckily Rooney and Inzy turned up in time to change the match, Rooney ending with 2-42 off 13 and Inzy's 31 not out off 39 balls continued his excellent form.
